AR - Augmented Reality and the new generation of users We are finally beginning to talk about Augmented Reality (AR) as something mainstream. We know that emails have long been playing second fiddle to the social media chat platforms, but business still uses it and as some will tell you: an AR email is a technology which will get you straight back into your inbox in a hurry. Yes, 3D emails are here and they are powered by AR. Demonstrating this level of technology in the classroom will inspire students to put away their Facebook Messenger, Snapchat and Instagram and begin looking at the benefits of email once more. We have seen emails open up where a sporting event broadcasts as an overlay in front of the text, a theatre performance segment to advertise the latest West End show or a business spreadsheet that throws a graphic out there with a dynamic and beautifully illustrated delivery. Students are showing that time and time again they are engaging with augmented reality products when presented with this technology in the classroom. They are clearly excited and show a willingness to learn as we deal with a technology of the future before most of the rest of us have yet to even see it. Learning tools and apps are being produced at volume to help the student in the classroom. Many of these AR systems are being produced and tested after pioneering tests. Moreover, they can be delivered right to the classroom in a laboratory setting status. After all, this is not business but education and students love to experiment and even improve of AR products that find the way into the classroom. Education, Science and the Laboratory AR can really bring about big amendments in the way we learn the major sciences; be it physics, chemistry or biology, the student will thrive in the classroom when AR is being utilised as a learning tool. Faculty Displays In many universities and colleges, it is not uncommon to see a row of photographs showing the heads of departments and various teachers – including the head teaching staff. A brief synopsis usually accompanies the image and a few letters after various teachers’ names fulfil the photographic wall. But what if AR came into play? What if you could touch the image of the tutor, star pupil, school representative or principal or director and see that image come alive? What if all the cascading text tells us more about the education and information surrounding them (privacy and data protection-enabled, of course). Even better, what if we could link via social media, email, LinkedIn or SMS to that tutor at the mere touch of the image. It would certainly be a more dynamic way of keeping in touch with the tutorial staff, and students will always know how to discover easier communications with their mentors through the process of the faculty wall that has been made into an augmented reality wonderland. However, AR in the classroom can put this devotion into a dynamic way of learning. AR apps and premade resourceful learning tools. To bring the pages of these text books to a living, moving graphic, and one will only need a smartphone and the premade app. There are many text and education book publishers that are already coming up with intuitive ways of integrating AR within its books. The books are actually encoded with augmented reality markers, so they will work dynamically with the new technology, tutors and students in the classroom. Augmented Reality on the Desk or a Surface. AR will in time appear as a 3D image in front of your eyes. It will not be on a screen or television set but beamed to a surface. AR in the kitchen has already been forecast with some futuristic interpretations on how we might touch the fridge door to order more milk, pinch the image of a PC and shift it from the fridge door to the breakfast bar or worktop; allowing the user to read the news straight off the kitchen counter or breakfast table. Working this ethic into the classroom will be performed in a similar way. Students will enter data on a desktop (by that we literally mean a desk counter and the term used for an office-based non-mobile PC) and pinch and move the data and work to another area in the classroom – perhaps where a science experiment is taking place, a roleplay event or a physical education class where new apparatus happen to be. Learning will never seem as much fun as this. Students will be able to flip, resize and move images in their very spatial zone. The amended information can be relayed by voice and captured for later imagery viewing, plus the ability to send this information back to the servers will be a very real possibility. Spreadsheets and Worksheets with AR Features Many office-based workers have had to deal with worksheets, pivot tables and spreadsheets for years and few find them very exciting. But if we were to tell you that AR-enabled worksheets and spreadsheets – which incorporate presentation software, word documents and 3D video – the thought suddenly becomes far more enticing. AR-enabled worksheets allow students to get to grips with AR wherever they may be. This should make homework more interesting and help them explore augmented reality products and features with great impunity and alacrity. If students are to build any sort of relationship with teachers, professors and their parents, then AR worksheets and spreadsheets are important in building this can actually make the tedious process of homework pretty easy for students and they can explore AR as well as the content at their home. AR-enabled worksheets come as an important aspect if the students are to build a positive relationship with education and technology. Make it Fun There are educational AR-based software tools and games that students can engage with that will make life in the classroom fun yet educational. It is always worth noting that a happy student learns faster than a bored one.
